  • A few high schools in the state offer courses in air conditioning and refrigeration. For related information and recommended courses to prepare for this occupation, Tennessee high school students may visit the Trade and Industrial Education Standards, Competency Profiles, and Resource Links online. Postsecondary courses in air conditioning and refrigeration are offered at most Tennessee Technology Centers.

    Military job training consists of between 8 and 22 weeks of classroom instruction, including practice in repair work. Training length varies depending on specialty. Course content typically includes refrigeration theory; installation and repair of refrigeration and air conditioning units; installation and repair of furnaces and boilers; and use of diagrams and blueprints. Further training occurs on the job and through advanced courses. The Army, Navy and Marine Corps offer certified apprenticeship programs in this occupation.
