Career Summary:


  • Prepare work schedules and assign duties to subordinates.

  • Civil service regulations govern the appointment of police and detectives in Tennessee. Candidates must be citizens of the United States, at least 20 years of age, and must meet rigorous physical and personal qualifications. Experience or education in law enforcement is required to enter this occupation. Some specialties may require a four-year college degree. Police science programs are conducted at many community colleges in Tennessee.

    A 4-year college degree is required to enter this occupation in the military. Job training consists of between 7 to 28 weeks of classroom instruction. Training length varies depending on specialty. Course content typically includes law enforcement administration; management of security problems; investigation procedures and reporting; and military law. Further training occurs through advanced courses.
