  • Most assistants learn their skills on the job, though many are trained in dental assisting programs offered by community colleges, trade schools, or technical centers. Some dentists prefer training their own assistants. Voluntary certification examinations are given by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), Incorporated. Upon passing the examination, dental assistants may use the initials CDA (certified dental assistant) following their names. However, in order to lawfully practice in Tennessee, dental assistants must comply with the regulations of the Tennessee Board of Dentistry Guidelines. In general, this requires at least 116 clock hours of lecture/didactic training as well as a minimum of 24 hours of radiological instruction.     Military job training consists of 9 to 14 weeks of classroom instruction including practice in dental care tasks. Further training occurs on the job and through advanced courses. Course content typically includes preventive dentistry, radiology (X-ray) techniques, dental office procedures, and dental hygiene.
