Career Summary:


  • Experience- A minimum of two to four years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed for these occupations. For example, an accountant must complete four years of college and work for several years in accounting to be considered qualified.
  • Education- Most of these occupations require a four - year bachelor's degree, but some do not.
  • Job Training- Employees in these occupations usually need several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training.
  • Examples- Many of these occupations involve coordinating, supervising, managing, or training others. Examples include accountants, human resource managers, computer programmers, teachers, chemists, and police detectives.

  • Edit or assist in editing videos for broadcast.
  • Write columns, editorials, commentaries, or reviews that interpret events or offer opinions.
  • Write reviews of literary, musical, and other artwork based on knowledge, judgment, and experience.

  • Most positions for reporters require a college degree. Writers must be able to express ideas clearly and logically. Creativity, curiosity, and a broad knowledge base are important assets. A college major in communications or journalism is helpful preparation. Many colleges and universities in Tennessee offer programs in journalism.

    Military job training consists of 9 to 12 weeks of classroom instruction. Course content typically includes newswriting and research; newspaper format and layout; photojournalism (writing news stories featuring pictures); and radio and television programming and production.
