- Applicants for a position as a mining safety inspector must have three to five years experience in mine safety, management, or supervision. They must also meet strict medical requirements and be physically able to perform arduous duties efficiently. Many inspectors are former miners. Persons with a baccalaureate degree in mining engineering may receive on-the-job training and a nine week instructional program that includes courses in mathematics, inspecting procedures, mining technology, surface structures, ventilation systems, roof supports, and fire protection. Inspectors are required to pass a civil service examination.
