Career Summary:


  • Experience- Extensive skill, knowledge, and experience are needed for these occupations. Many require more than five years of experience. For example, surgeons must complete four years of college and an additional five to seven years of specialized medical training to be able to do their job.
  • Education- A bachelor's degree is the minimum formal education required for these occupations. However, many also require graduate school. For example, they may require a master's degree, and some require a Ph.D., M.D., or J.D. (law degree).
  • Job Training- Employees may need some on-the-job training, but most of these occupations assume that the person will already have the required skills, knowledge, work-related experience, and/or training.
  • Examples- These occupations often involve coordinating, training, supervising, or managing the activities of others to accomplish goals. Very advanced communication and organizational skills are required. Examples include librarians, lawyers, aerospace engineers, physicists, school psychologists, and surgeons.

  • Customer and Personal Service - Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Computers and Electronics - Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.
  • Engineering and Technology - Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • Clerical - Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
  • Physics - Knowledge and prediction of physical principles, laws, their interrelationships, and applications to understanding fluid, material, and atmospheric dynamics, and mechanical, electrical, atomic and sub- atomic structures and processes.
  • English Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Administration and Management - Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.

  • In order to practice in Tennessee, the following criteria must be met:
    • graduation from a school of architecture accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), and three years of architectural experience satisfactory to the Board; OR
    • graduation from an architectural curriculum of not less than 4 years offered by a school of architecture as part of an architectural curriculum toward a NAAB accredited degree, and 5 years of architectural experience satisfactory to the Board; OR
    • graduation from an architectural-related curriculum of not less than 4 years accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, and 7 years of architectural experience satisfactory to the Board; AND
    • completion of the Intern-Architect Development Program of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards; AND
    • passage of the Architect Registration Examination; AND
    • an unexpired certificate from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.
    The majority of all architecture degrees are from 5-year Bachelor of Architecture programs at colleges and universities. A typical program includes courses in architectural history and theory, building design, professional practice, mathematics, physical science, and liberal arts.
