Career Summary:


  • Experience- A minimum of two to four years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed for these occupations. For example, an accountant must complete four years of college and work for several years in accounting to be considered qualified.
  • Education- Most of these occupations require a four - year bachelor's degree, but some do not.
  • Job Training- Employees in these occupations usually need several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training.
  • Examples- Many of these occupations involve coordinating, supervising, managing, or training others. Examples include accountants, human resource managers, computer programmers, teachers, chemists, and police detectives.

  • Record information such as production figures, farm management practices, and parent stock data, and prepare financial and operational reports.
  • Confer with buyers to arrange for the sale of crops.

  • Growing up on a family farm and participating in agricultural programs for young people sponsored by the National Future Farmers of America or the 4-H youth educational programs are important sources for training for this career. However, modern farming requires increasingly complex scientific, business, and financial decisions. Therefore, even individuals who were raised on farms must acquire the appropriate education.     Not all farm managers grew up on farms or ranches. For these individuals, a bachelor's degree in business with a concentration in agriculture is important. In addition to formal education, managers need several years of work experience in all aspects of farm and ranch operations in order to qualify for a manager position.
