Job Description: Motor vehicle assemblers work on production lines where automobiles, vans, recreational vehicles and trucks are made. They fit and fasten parts together using hand and power tools and welding equipment.

Duties: Motor vehicle assemblers may perform some or all of the following tasks:

  • Position and fasten together body subassemblies
  • Install mechanical and electrical components and systems
  • Fit and adjust doors, hoods, and trunk lids
  • Seal joints and seams
  • Fasten molding and trim into place
  • Fill vehicle systems with fluids

Working Conditions: Motor vehicle assemblers work in large plants with automated assembling equipment. The atmosphere in the plant is usually noisy. Assemblers usually work in teams of 10-12 members. Since they perform the same tasks over and over, they may be subject to repetitive strain injuries of the wrists, elbows, shoulders, and neck. Assemblers normally work a standard 40-hour week. Overtime work may sometimes be required to meet production deadlines.

Educational Requirements: Most employers prefer hiring high school graduates for this position. Much of the job is learned through on-the-job training with experienced motor vehicle assemblers. Companies that employ workers in this field usually give aptitude tests to applicants. Outlook: Employment in this occupation is highly sensitive to overall economic conditions, and may also be seasonal. Current labor market conditions are good and should remain so through the year 2012. Conditions may be even better for those who can demonstrate an aptitude for working with high technology applications, as the use of robotics and computer-controlled equipment continues to grow in this industry.
