Job Description: Team assemblers work as part of a unit having responsibility for assembling an entire product or component of a product. Team assemblers can perform all tasks conducted by the team in the assembly process and rotate through all or most of them rather than being assigned to a specific task on a permanent basis. They may participate in making management decisions affecting the work. Team leaders who work as part of the team are members who have additional responsibilities for team success.

Duties: Team assemblers may fasten parts together with bolts, screws, rivets or other fasteners using hand tools and portable power tools. Assemblers may operate drill presses, punch presses, or riveting machines to assist in assembly. In general, they may:

  • Develop layout and plan sequence of operations assembling products
  • Set up and operate machines
  • Verify conformance of workpieces to specifications
  • Position, align, fit, and fasten parts together

Working Conditions: Generally team assemblers work in factories or shops. They may work at a workbench or on a shop floor. Their surroundings are usually noisy. The work may include hard physical labor and concentration. They typically work a standard 40-hour week.

Educational Requirements: Most employers prefer hiring high school graduates for this position. Much of the job is learned through on-the-job training with experienced assemblers.
