Job Description: Airport attendants do many of the jobs at airports which do not require special training or skills. They help take care of airplanes, runways, buildings, baggage areas, and grounds. Airport attendants do not make repairs on airplanes. They are really utility workers at airports and may work either at large city owned airports or at small privately owned airstrips. Most of their work involves groundskeeping, transporting baggage, and care of aircraft.

Duties: Airport attendants may perform the following duties:

  • Clean airplanes
  • Transport baggage to and from airplanes
  • Inspect buildings and hangars for needed repairs and fire hazards
  • Tie airplanes to the ground during bad weather
  • Fill airplanes with oil and gas
  • Fill dips or holes in runways
  • Cut grass and maintain the grounds around the airport

Working Conditions: Airport attendants usually work outdoors. They must work in all types of weather -- heat, ice, rain, and snow. They must stand, kneel, bend, and lift over long periods of time.

Educational Requirements: Training requirements vary by organization. In general, large airports have up to one month of formal on-the-job training, while smaller airports have no formal training period at all.

Outlook: Slower than average growth in employment of airport attendants is expected through the year 2012, reflecting automation within the industry.
